U.S. Swimmer Bobby Finke Triumphs with World Record in 1,500 Meters
In a spectacular finish to the swimming events, U.S. swimmer Bobby Finke shattered the world record in the 1,500-meter freestyle on Sunday, marking a triumphant end to the competition. Finke completed the race in 14 minutes, 30.67 seconds, surpassing the previous world record of 14:31.02 set by China’s Sun Yang at the 2012 London Games.
Finke's race was marked by consistent world-record pace, culminating in a powerful final stretch that sealed his victory. His performance not only earned him the gold medal but also made him the first male swimmer to win back-to-back golds in the 1,500-meter event since Australia's Grant Hackett achieved this feat from 2000 to 2004. Additionally, Finke is the first American to win consecutive titles in this event since Mike Burton in 1968-72.
Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri claimed the silver with a time of 14:34.55, while Ireland's Daniel Wiffen, who had triumphed in the 800-meter freestyle, settled for bronze at 14:39.63. Hungary's David Betlehem narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth.
Finke's record-setting performance marked the third swimming world record set at these Olympics and provided a crucial boost for the U.S. team, which has faced some setbacks despite leading the overall medal count. With this gold, the U.S. now shares the top position with Australia for the most gold medals at these Games.
